Home EV Charger Installation: Brands, Costs, and What to Expect

Home EV Charger Installation

If you've got an electric car (or you're about to get one), a home charger makes life a lot easier. Here's what you need to know before getting one fitted.

Why Bother With a Home Charger?

It's much cheaper
Home charging costs around 7-8p per kWh on an off-peak tariff. Public rapid chargers are 60-80p per kWh. For a typical EV, that's roughly £4 vs £30 per full charge.
It's convenient
Plug in when you get home, wake up with a full battery. No queuing at public chargers.
It adds value
Buyers are starting to expect them, especially in areas where EVs are common.

Popular Brands

Easee One
Compact and well-made, works with all EVs. Good app for managing charging schedules.
Zappi
Made by Myenergi. The best option if you've got solar panels because it can divert spare solar energy to your car.
Ohme Home Pro
Good value. Smart scheduling charges your car at the cheapest times on your tariff automatically.
Pod Point
Straightforward and reliable. Comes tethered (cable attached) or untethered.
Wallbox Pulsar Plus
Compact with decent smart features.

What You Need

Off-street parking
A driveway or garage where we can mount the charger.
Sufficient electrical supply
Most homes can handle a 7kW charger. We'll check this when we visit.
Space on your consumer unit
A dedicated circuit is needed. If the board is full or outdated, it might need an upgrade (we'll let you know).

How the Installation Works

  1. Assessment: We check your supply, consumer unit, and where you want the charger.
  2. Installation: We run a dedicated circuit from the board to the charger location, mount it, and wire it in.
  3. Testing: Full electrical testing.
  4. Handover: We walk you through using the charger and app, and hand over the certificates.

Most installs take half a day.
